Obituary

Vera E. Anthony, 83, went home to be with the Lord, family, and lost loves on Thursday January 10, 2019. She was surrounded by her family at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington DE.

She worked as a CNA for the Delaware Home and Hospital in Smyrna for 32 years where she earned several awards for outstanding care and great compassion for her patients. She loved caring for each patient she was assigned to and she took pride in her work.

She enjoyed gardening, flowers and vegetables, crocheting, bird-watching, and especially being with her family. She also loved watching the Price is Right and the Young and the Restless. Most recently, she enjoyed doing the seek and find books. She was always there for her children and grandchildren whenever the need would arise and she enjoyed cooking for the whole family.

In recent years, she spent most of her time with her son Eddie whom she lived with. He took the utmost care of her and was not only was her son, but also her best friend. She also had her favorite cat and companion (Henry).

She was preceded in death by her husbands, John Anthony Sr. (the love of her life), and Robert Ellers; her parents, John and Louise McCarty; a brother John McCarty; a sister, Ruth Horn; a grandson, Gary Bland Jr.; and her sweet baby girl, Elizabeth Ellers.

She is survived by her children, John Anthony Jr. (Polly Shaner); Patrick Anthony (Patsy); Robert Anthony (Sandy Massie); Susan Anthony; Ginny Clendaniel (John); Irvin Ellers; Edward Ellers; and David Ellers. There were several other children that she took in over the years that had no place to go and she took them in as her own. She passed on that compassion to her children and grand-childen who also took in people in-need. She is also survived by her siblings, Willard McCarty; Jimmy McCarty; Charles McCarty; and Blanch Fluharty; 28 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

The family would like to thank the 5th floor specialists and staff of Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Francis Hospital for their excellent care and making our mother's last weeks a blessing to the entire family.

Services will be held 6:00 PM Tuesday January 15 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call from 5 PM until the time of services. Interment will be private.
