Obituary

Thomasine MacMillan Whitehurst, age 75, of Smyrna, Delaware, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

Born on October 14, 1950, in Savannah, Georgia, Thomasine was the daughter of Thomas H. MacMillan and Jacqelyn B. MacMillan, both of Savannah. She attended Baldwin High School in Milledgeville, Georgia.

On July 31, 1968, Thomasine married Romie D. Whitehurst of Macon, Georgia, in Milledgeville, Georgia. During their marriage, they traveled extensively for Romie’s work before settling in Smyrna, Delaware, where they built a life on family property alongside her sister and brother-in-law.

Thomasine was a devoted Roman Catholic whose faith was a central part of her life, providing guidance, strength, and comfort throughout the years. She prayed the Rosary daily, and St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, was her favorite saint. Her faith gave her deep meaning and solace and remained a steadfast source of support throughout her life.

Thomasine is survived by her husband, Romie D. Whitehurst; her daughter, Dreme T. Riley; her granddaughter, Kealy E. Schafenberg; her sister, Kathryn A. Lamb; brother-in-law, Thomas D. Lamb; and niece, Heidi J. Lamb. Her nephew, Damon H. Lamb, passed away on October 15, 2019.

She will be remembered for her love of family, spirited determination, and unwavering devotion to children and animals. Strong-willed, compassionate, and never afraid to speak her mind, she left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her memory will be treasured always by those who loved her.
