Russell George Davis, 78, of Smyrna, DE died on Monday April 29, 2013 at 9:53 PM. He was born to the late George Russell Davis and Anna Louise Thom Davis on August 4, 1934, in Cambridge, MD. Russell enlisted in the Army selective service in Baltimore, MD as soon as he turned 18 and finished boot camp in Fort Jackson, S.C. He then went on to Gordon, GA for schooling. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in June 1957. While in the service, Russell served in Austria and Germany and successfully completed the Powerman course in Gordon, GA. He was awarded the Occupation Medal of Germany, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Russell worked for many years as a Pipefitter for the Local 782 in Seaford, DE. Russell yielded his life to God, and was baptized and participated in his church. He loved and served God throughout his last years. Russell is survived by his wife of 13 years: Claire Davis; a daughter, Carol L. Gannon of Harrington, DE; one granddaughter, Ariana Gannon, of Harrington; a nephew, Danny McFarland, of New Castle, DE. He had one sister, now deceased, Anna Mae McFarland, of New Castle, DE. He had a faithful friend and loyal companion, Suzy, his 6 year-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix, adopted from the local shelter. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday May 4 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna. Interment will be privately held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
