Richard H.
Wehmeyer
December 9, 1936 – November 5, 2024
Richard H. Wehmeyer (Pop), 87, of Middletown DE, passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 5, 2024, surrounded by family. Richard was predeceased by his loving wife, Doris, and sister, Elaine Hickok. Pop was survived by two sons: Richard (Loterly) and William (Karin), six grandchildren: Richard, David, Sarah, Elizabeth, Anneliese, and William, as well as nine great-grandchildren, and his brother, Robert (Mary Jo).
In winter of 1936, Richard was born to Andrew & Edna Wehmeyer in the Bronx. He grew up also living with his grandparents, Oscar and Olga Hopfer, who loved him very much. He had fond memories of fishing and taking long walks around the city with Oscar, and Olga's homemade red cabbage. His father, Andrew, gave him a lifelong love for the New York Yankees, and they often listened together on the radio. Richard and his family moved to upstate New York, where he graduated High School and went on to join the Army. He spent three exciting years in Germany serving our country during the Cold War in the 10th Infantry Division, being attached to recon and calvary units. He loved sharing the many stories from his time in the Bronx and Germany.
Upon returning from Germany, he met Doris, the love of his life, through a church event. A few years later, when she finished nursing school, they were married. Not long after, Richard put his faith in trust in Jesus Christ. God Blessed him with a long career on Wall Street, where he traded various treasury securities and banker acceptances. Richard loved helping his neighbors with home projects and anything that needed to be done. He had a love for all things weather and his favorite season was winter. When the opportunity presented itself, he would gladly plow a neighbor's driveway. He loved God's Word and was a long-term member of the New York Bible Society, which later became the International Bible Society.
Pop will be remembered for his cheerful demeanor and his loving smile, as well as someone that had a great sense of humor and frequently thought of others. He most of all loved his family, his church and country. Pop was happiest spending time getting to know people, and sharing stories together.
