Obituary

Laslo Gyula Racz answered God's calling to enter his kingdom on Saturday, July 6, 2024.  He was 85 when he passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Wilmington Hospital while on hospice.

Laslo was very loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.  He was a man, who if you were lucky to meet, you were up for interesting deep conversations.  He had a great sense of humor and can talk about anything for hours.  He was never shy about speaking his mind and always told the truth if you liked it or not.  One of his greatest passions was listening to music.  Everything from Pink Floyd, A-ha (Take On Me specifically), classical music and contemporary jazz.  He truly was an audiophile, perhaps that's why his career was in audio and video repair.

He also greatly enjoyed cooking.  He would spend all weekend making Hungarian dishes, making sure never to rush the cooking process.  On any weekend you would find him in the kitchen enjoying a glass of wine or whiskey while prepping food to cook and have his music playing (loudly) in the background.  He always welcomed people to hang around and grab a plate of food, have a drink and to sit at the table and talk.  If you entered his house as a stranger you left as his friend.  He also loved taking spontaneous short road trips.  Anywhere from a fishing trip, a day at the beach, to the casinos or to visit family.  He was a great man who was a hard worker, provided for his family and always helped you out, stranger or friend, no matter what problems you were having.

Unfortunately cancer, specifically squamous cell carcinoma, took him away from us.  He fought so hard and went through so much in his last year to fight it but it ultimately took over.  In his final years he was the care taker to the love of his life, Margit, as she too has health issues.  His life revolved around her and her well-being.

He lived a great life with many adventures.  Truly running the treads off the tires of life until his time came.  He lived and survived through the Hungarian Revolution and resided in different countries in Europe.  After waiting three years for a visa, he eventually packed a suitcase and jumped on a plane by himself to New York and started a new life in a land whose language he did not speak or have any friends or relatives in.   Again, a great man who lived life.  Till we see you again - Shine on, you crazy diamond!  WE LOVE YOU!

Zsuzsanna Racz gave birth to Laslo in Szeged, Hungary on March 21, 1939. When Laslo was three years old his father passed away as a hero in the military where he served as an officer.  Laslo was raised in Mako, Hungary and later lived in Budapest, Hungary.  He also lived a short time in Mannheim, Germany.  In 1967 he moved to the United States and resided in New York till 2007 when he moved to Smyrna Delaware.

In his early professional life, he was a teacher of electronics, physics and chemistry in Budapest.  In Germany he was employed by Mercedes Benz.  When he lived in New York he worked for Sony Corporation as an electronics technician for 18 years.  He had eventually ventured onto opening a successful business in Brooklyn, New York repairing audio and video equipment.   He later retired in 2006.

Laslo met the love of his life, Margit Racz, in 1967 and they married in 1971. He is survived by her and their three boys, Leslie Racz, George Racz and his wife Maria Racz, Peter Racz and his wife Jennifer Racz.  He is also the grandfather to Lauren, George (Georgie), Kayla, Peter (P.J.), Nate and Richard.

A celebration of life will be announced to friends and family to attend in the near future.  God bless Laslo, his family and friends, and anyone else battling cancer.
