John James Houghton

John J. Houghton, longtime Smyrna, Delaware resident, died March 28, 2020 at his home at the age of 77.

Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late David and Teresa Iacono Houghton of Swarthmore and predeceased by his sister Mary Lobodzinski.

Mr. Houghton was a 1960 graduate of St. James High School. He retired after 23 years as a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force. He did tours of duty in Turkey, Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, Germany and Japan, receiving many commendations and medals.

Mr. Houghton was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, chapter 242. After the Air Force, he owned a vending machine business and enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan.

John was survived by sisters Teresa Joseph of Smyrna, Delaware, Rita Lunney of Florida, Rose Greenleaf of Glen Mills, PA, Cathy Hartranft of Clayton, Delaware and brother David J. Houghton of Springfield, PA. Nephews David Greenleaf, Glenn Greenleaf, Keith Farren, Aric Farren. Nieces Sara Messick, Erin Iteen, Happy, and Rita Lunney, and many grand nephews and nieces.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the burial is private with military honors at the Delaware Memorial Veteran Cemetery in Bear, Delaware.
