Scotton
May 31, 1941 – January 12, 2023
Janet Delores Carney Scotton was born on May 31, 1941 to the late Robert James Jr. and Ethel L Sammons Carney near Cheswold De. She was one of 15 children born to this union. She departed this life on January 12, 2023 at the home of her brother and sister-in- law, Larry and Lois Carney, surrounded by family and friends.
Janet attended the Cheswold School in her early years of life. She also attended Dover High School for a short time.
Janet had various jobs of employment over the years. She worked at Carrolls Sales Barn in Felton, De., VanHoltons Pickle Factory in Kenton, De., Leeds Travel Ware in Clayton, De., Capital School District from which she retired as a bus driver for special needs children. After retiring she continued various odd jobs. She was a patient care provider for Shorecare of Delaware until 2020.
Janet became a baptized member of the Forest Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church near Cheswold De. early in life. She served as a deaconess, church board member, church recording clerk, assistant treasurer, sabbath school teacher for children, and helped with church social diners. She also assisted with the Food Bank service for the church in the Dover area. Janet remained a faithful member of the church until her health declined and she could no longer fulfill her duties. However, she did remain a member until her death.
Janet had various hobbies that she enjoyed such as reading, needle point, crocheting, going to yard sales, and other crafting activities. She was also greatly involved with and dedicated her time and effort helping many family members and friends during times when they were sick or needed help. She also dedicated her life to helping raise and care for her grandchildren who were her pride and joy. She loved spending time with her brothers and sisters. She even traveled alone to Texas to visit her brother and sister-in-law, Brownie and Barbara. She considered this a great achievement for herself.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ethel Carney, her oldest son, Ulysses Emery Sammons Jr "Hoss", grandson, "Matthew Wade Sammons Jr "Matty Wade", brothers, Clarence and Donald Carney, sisters, Agnes Sammons Durham, Emma Carney Seeney, Loretta Carney Draine, Leone Mae Carney Street, and Frances Carney Minner.
Janet is survived by her husband of 41 years, Carl Richard Scotton, one son, Matthew W. Sammons, both of Dover De. She also leaves behind her granddaughter, Michelle N. Sammons Sells, and husband, Robert Sells, two great grandchildren, Matthew P. and Harlie M. Sells. Sister, Harriett L. Street of Milton, De. Brothers, Melvin "Brownie" Carney and Barbara of Fort Worth Texas, Larry W. Carney, Isaac R. Carney, Ronald L. Carney, and Roland Oscar Carney, all of Dover De. Two sisters in law, Lois Morris Carney and Evelyn Mosley Carney. Special life-long friends, Marlyn Durham Gourley and Norma Ridgeway Darrah.
Funeral services will be held Sunday January 22, 2023, at Forest Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church, 4950 Pearsons Corner Rd Dover, De. Viewing will be from 11:00am – 1:00pm with services directly after. Burial and final resting place will be held at the Forest Grove Church Cemetery. The repass meal will follow burial and all are invited to join.
