James R. Shuman, 90, of Smyrna, DE, formerly of Wilmington, DE passed away on Saturday December 25, 2021, at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, Dover, DE. His health had recently been declining before getting Covid-19.

Born April 27, 1931, in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of the late Katherine L. Long. Following graduation from Wilmington High School in 1949, Mr. Shuman joined the Army and served as a cook during the Korean War.

After serving our country in the military, he spent many years in retail sales in Pennsylvania, followed by years of working in the restaurant industry.

He had a life-long passion for baking cakes, pies, and cookies especially for friends. Jim was a great baker.

The last few years, he enjoyed coloring adult coloring books. He had over 1,400 pictures in his collection that he referred to as his art gallery.

Jim had a remarkable memory. Even at the age of 90, he could give names, dates, places, and events without hesitation. He had impeccable taste and was well organized right up until the end.

He had a big heart and enjoyed giving gifts to others. He had an even bigger heart for cats. A cat lover most of his life, he rescued, saved, and adopted countless cats over the years.

He was preceded in death by his mother; his twin sister, Joanne McClure; and maternal grandparents James and Nora Shuman.

He is survived by his nephew, Raymond W. Spence (Gina) of Smyrna; his friend and caretaker Robin Kassing of Kenton; and his beloved cat Charlotte. He will be sadly missed by those close to him.

At the request of Mr. Shuman, services will be private. Interment will be at The Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.
