Obituary

Irene M. Caley, of Smyrna, passed away on April 5, 2018. She was 90.

She was born on September 21, 1927 in Elkton, MD, the daughter of the late Arthur T. and M. Etta Hobson Moffitt.

She was a 1945 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School, Smyrna, and graduated from Madison College, Harrisonburg, VA in 1949.

While in college, she was fortunate to travel throughout Western Canada with her sisters.

She taught two years at Delaware City School and later worked at the Smyrna Gift Shop, Montgomery Ward, Sayers Jewelers, and the Smyrna Theater. She owned and operated The Wicket, a gift shop in Smyrna for 17 years, retiring in 1992.

She enjoyed doing crafts, sewing, designing clothes, and cats. She also enjoyed meeting new people and sharing her knowledge and collections relating to the history of the Town of Smyrna.

Irene enjoyed taking long walks every day through the town she so loved.

Irene was a charter member of the Duck Creek Historical Society and had served on the board of directors. She was also a member of the auxiliary of VFW Post 8801, Clayton, and had volunteered at the DE Public Archives for many years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Caley; and her sisters, Mabel E. Moffitt Evans and Ruth H. Moffitt.

She is survived by her guardians, Hank and Sherry Steller, and numerous friends throughout the Smyrna-Clayton community.

Per her request, burial will be privately held at Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna.
