Helen Scofield Miller, 91, of Smyrna, passed away on Tuesday August 22, 2023, at Cadia Capitol, Dover, where she had resided for the past two years.

She was born March 18, 1932, in Worcester, New York, the daughter of the late Dorothy (nee) Mereness and Frederick Scofield.

Helen attended cosmetology school and worked for many years as a beautician in the town of Smyrna. She was also a waitress at the Wayside Inn for many years to help finance her daughters' college educations. In addition, she worked as a leasing agent in Berlin, Maryland.

Helen loved cats and always had one in her family. She also enjoyed gardening, doing puzzles, sewing, dancing, sun tanning, soft shell crabs, and sitting on the beach with a glass of Merlot on ice. She loved decorating for Christmas, especially with glitter. She was very patriotic and loved the Phillies and Robert Mitchum.

She is survived by two daughters, Dawn Miller (Gary DeCamp), Diane Dolan; grandchildren, Bryan and Kyle Dolan, and Aaron and Jesse Nichols; great-grandchildren, Nora Dolan, and Asa and Sibyl Nichols; and her cat, Sadie.

She was predeceased by Gordon R. Miller, her beloved husband of 61 years until his death in 2012. She missed him every day he was gone.

A visitation will be held from 11 AM – 12:30 PM Saturday September 9 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to First State Animal Center and SPCA, 32 Shelter Circle, Camden, DE 19934.
