Frederick LeRoy Ewing crossed peacefully to be with his Lord on Saturday, September 5. He was 72 years old. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of LeRoy Walter Ewing and Phyllis Edna (Gregory) Ewing. He grew up in Woonsocket, Rhode Island and graduated from Woonsocket High School. He attended Providence College, graduating cum laude with a degree in Political Science and Public Administration. For the last 4 ½ years he has lived in Smyrna, Delaware in the Spring Meadow community. The community and its people were very important to him and he often said what a good decision it was for him and his wife to move there. He was a member of the Financial Committee and the Journalism Club, and participated in many community events. Fred worked as a salesman and a manager in the steel/metals service center industry for 41 years. He spent 35 years at Edgcomb Metals/Mack Steel, and retired from Kivort Steel in 2005. He was always busy. He and his wife were partners in an antique shop and then went on to have their own shop. He was skilled at refinishing and restoring the finish on antique furniture and did that for many years. He enjoyed buying and selling collectibles such as post cards, sports cards, and sports memorabilia, especially as it related to hockey. He was a loyal Albany River Rats and New Jersey Devils hockey fan for many years. Fred had a love for dogs, most importantly his beloved Ace, and enjoyed watching dogs for his neighbors at different times. Fred was predeceased by his father and mother, and his brother Robert N. Ewing. He is survived by his wife, Bette G. (Shelton) Ewing, his children Kristen (Brian) Jones of Braintree, Massachusetts, Dawn (Bill) Mosher of Rockford, Illinois, and F. Gregory (Karine) Ewing of Parlin, New Jersey. Fred was "Grandaddy" to Gavin (Brianna) Spuck, Dana Spuck, Emily, Joshua, and McKenna Mosher, and Marianna and Nicholas Ewing, and to great-grandchildren Caleb and Reagan Spuck. He was "Grandad Fred" to Katelyn and Emily Jones. A memorial service will be held 4:00 PM Friday September 11 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 2:30 PM. A reception will be held at the Spring Meadow Clubhouse, 50 Spring Meadow Dr., at 5:00 PM. A graveside service at North Burial Grounds in Providence, Rhode Island will be held at a later date.
