Edgar George
Smith
June 4, 1936 – December 11, 2021
Edgar George Smith, "Smitty," died peacefully in his sleep in the wee hours of the morning December 11, 2021. Born June 4, 1936 in Smyrna Landing, Edgar was the fourth of George and Gladys (Voss) Smith's children and is now reunited with his parents and sisters in Heaven. Edgar was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ruth (2013) and their son, Eddy (2010). He is survived by his two daughters, Terri (Rhodes) and Megan (Mazer), a much-loved grandson from each of his three children: Devin (Eddy's), Darren (Megan's) and Tyler (Terri's) as well as seven admiring nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Smyrna until moving to Illinois in his later years where Terri and her family took loving care of him, he graduated from John Basset Moore High School, had a stint in the Army during the Korean war, and also had a stint as a Barber in cousin Vance Cole's Barbershop at the corner of Main and Commerce Streets. He is best known as Smyrna/Clayton's best Dry Cleaner as he inherited his father's business, Commerce Cleaners at the corner of Commerce and Delaware Streets and took great pride in his work for several decades there. After an early retirement, he delivered heating oil for Clements Supply in Clayton.
In the late 1960's-early 1970's he thrilled as a dirtbike race trail rider with The Delaware Enduro Riders, and enjoyed riding his street motorcycle up until he was in his early 70's, taking annual trips to ride the Appalachian Trail in spots.
Edgar also took great pride and pleasure in being a member of The Freemasons Masonic Lodge, where he served a term as a Master. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his Masonic brethren.
He loved the sunshine, his family, his friends, the bounty of Delaware's Summer produce harvested every year (lima beans were his favorite), riding his motorcycle, music, 'murder/mystery' books and movies, comedy, Ladies' Auxiliary firehouse or church suppers where, knowing there was something better to come, he was often seen with his fork in his breast pocket after the main course while awaiting the dessert spread (chicken & dumplin's and lima beans at one supper? Wow!), and all things chocolate.
Please don't send flowers. Daughters would be grateful for donations to The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) https://alzfdn.org/support-us/donate/ or mail: 322 8th Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10001 in his honor if you're so inclined.
As he hated the cold and didn't want his body placed into the cold ground, he wished to be cremated and his daughters will plan his Celebration of Life in warmer weather 2022. When planned, they will publish the date and place so all who wish to attend may do so. In the meantime, please "keep your fork."
