David Taylor Birney, 91, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family on April 29, 2012. David, the son of the late David Paul & Bessie J. Birney was born in Cecil County MD on July 17, 1920. He lived a fulfilled life, enjoying his large family and many friends. David was a hardworking man who put God and his family first but always opened his heart and door to anyone in need. As a member of Salem United Methodist Church, throughout the years he was an Elder and part of the Pastoral Care Team. He was a World War II veteran serving his country in the Army Air Corps and was a member of American Legion Post 14 Smyrna, DE. David worked for Post Electric in New Castle as TV repairman. He then went on to work as a service technician at Sears & Roebuck for 30 years out of their McArthur Dr. Service Dept, retiring in 1992. "Dutch", as he was known by many friends and cousins, was an avid music lover who had amassed a record collection that at one time numbered in the tens of thousands of albums that took over an entire room in his home. Always known for having his camera close by he loved taking photos of family and friends at every opportunity and was often asked to photograph special events such as weddings. David leaves behind his devoted wife of 67 years, Hazel M. (Walls), children: Jane E. Kobetich, David T. Birney Jr., Mildred E. Gamborg-Nielsen, John P. Birney & wife Beth, Susan M. Mills, Frank D. Birney & wife Tracy, Christian Wailes; 14 grandchildren and their spouses; 27 great grandchildren; 4 great, great grandchildren; brother, Frank A Birney; as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son, George M. Birney; son-in-laws: Edward Kobetich, Lars Gamborg-Nielsen; brothers: James and Elwood Birney; and sister, Elizabeth Webber. A service to celebrate David's life will be 12:30PM Friday May 4 at Salem United Methodist Church, 469 Salem Church Rd., Newark, where family and friends may visit from 10:00 until 12:30. Burial will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park in New Castle immediately following the service.
