Obituary

Daniel Francis Beutner, AKA "Mr. Wonderful", 78, of Smyrna, Delaware, passed away on November 20, 2025, at the Center at Eden Hill, Dover, Delaware.

He was born on April 11, 1947, in Queens, New York, the son of the late John J. Beutner Sr. and Anna Beutner. He grew up in Queens and attended PS 146 before attending John Adams High School.

In 1964, Dan proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving until 1969, including combat in the Vietnam War. He served as a sharpshooter and flamethrower operator and later married his beautiful wife Paula and moved to Delaware. His service was a defining source of pride throughout his life. He also served with the Air Force Reserves in the 1990's.

Dan's love for family, humor, and connection was felt by everyone who knew him. A devoted father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Dan made laughter a top priority and could lift any room with his pranks, his quick wit, and his warm presence. He was a coffee connoisseur, famously selfless, and the first to drop whatever he was doing to help someone in need.

He adored his family and cherished every family reunion. Many of his happiest hours were spent in his beloved gazebo, relaxing with a cup of coffee while watching wildlife drift by.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Paula Beutner, of Smyrna; his children, Melissa Wuest, Thomas J. Beutner (Cindy), and Nicole Smith (John); his grandchildren, Ronald Wuest Jr., Anthony Wuest, Christian Smith, Luke Smith, and Nick Bissette (Taylor). He is also survived by his FAVORITE nieces including Vinnie, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and cherished friends whom he deeply cared for.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Rita Delany, Cecilia Beutner, and Mary Gendron; and a brother, John J. Beutner Jr.

Life Celebration and Remembrance Services will be 4:00 PM Friday November 28 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, with a visitation beginning at 2:00 PM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tunnell to Towers Foundation, https://t2t.org/donate/  or to local fire department and ambulance services, honoring Dan's lifelong respect for those who serve.

Dan will be remembered for the phrases he lovingly shared throughout his life:

"I know you first"

"You don't know it now, but you will"

"You see this smile on my face?"

"You're it"

His smile, humor, and heart will be deeply missed.
