December 11, 1928 – June 1, 2021
Charles F. Hayes Sr. (Charlie), 92, of Smyrna, formerly of Browntown, Wilmington and Lewes DE, passed away at his daughter's residence on Tuesday June 1, 2021.
He was born in Wilmington, DE on December 11, 1928, the son of the late Joseph Hayes and Lucy Ann (Czajkowski) Hayes. He attended St. Mary School on the eastside of Wilmington, DE and served in the United States Navy from February 8, 1946, through December 10, 1947.
He was employed by Electric Hose & Rubber Co. for 30 years, and for Delaware Car until his retirement. He was also employed part-time with Bank of Delaware/PNC.
He enjoyed singing at the Cheers Center in Milton DE. and the Senior Center at Grace Church in Milton. He also enjoyed crabbing, fishing on his boat, and going to the beach with his family.
He was "Mr. Fix-it" for everyone, and played Santa for the family. He was the cook for the Boy Scouts Troup 450 of New Castle and always went to church on Saturdays at St Polycarp Catholic Church in Smyrna.
He is survived by a son, Chuck Hayes and a daughter, Barbara Tull, both of Smyrna; a brother, Robert Hayes; grandchildren, Amanda (Fred) Ryan, Christopher Hayes, and Becca (Zach) Taylor; great-grandchildren, Jaxson Ryan, Anthony Hayes, and Rylee Taylor.
He was predeceased by his wife of 20 years, Hedwig (Hattie) Hayes; siblings Elizabeth (Betty) Boan, Joseph (Rocky) Hayes, and Theresa Ann George, and son-in-law Frank Tull.
A visitation will be held from 6-8:00 PM Wednesday June 9, 2021 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11:00 AM Thursday June 10, 2021 at St. Polycarp Catholic Church, 55 Ransom Lane, Smyrna.
Burial will be 10:00 AM Tuesday June 22, 2021 at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
