Obituary

Capt. (Ret.) Arthur George Sedmont, Sr.

Captain (Retired) Arthur G. Sedmont Sr., (affectionately known as E.Z. R/T) age 84, passed away peacefully at home in Smyrna, Delaware on Thursday, March 19, at 7:27 p.m. Eastern time, surrounded by family and friends.

He was born on July 1, 1941, in Newark, NJ, and lived a life defined by service, devotion, resilience, and a deep appreciation for the people and passions that brought him joy.

E.Z.  proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Captain. His military career took him across the world—from Japan and the Philippines to Turkey and Vietnam—where he served during the war. Along the way, he earned a master's degree and taught at the college level, sharing his knowledge while continuing his own lifelong pursuit of learning.

After retiring from the Air Force, E. Z. continued his commitment to service as a Housing Code Official for the State of Delaware. He also became a leader in his community, serving as both a council member and mayor of Cheswold, Delaware, where he was known not only for his leadership, but for his kindness, humor, and genuine care for others.

But beyond his accomplishments, E.Z. will be most remembered for the way he loved.

He was married to Maria Zenaida Perez from 1964 to 1997, with whom he raised four children. Later, he married Nancy Bergman on November 22, 1997, beginning a partnership that would define the next chapter of his life. Their marriage was one of deep companionship, faith, and unwavering devotion.

In Nancy's later years, E.Z. became her constant caregiver and companion. Each evening, he would massage her back and hold her hand—a quiet, faithful ritual of love. One moment, shared in his own words, captures that devotion: after hosting a gathering for friends and family, he returned home early to care for Nancy. When she asked why he had come back before the celebration ended, he simply told her, "to take care of you." She smiled, thanked him, and told him she loved him. It was in these simple, daily acts that E.Z.'s love was most clearly seen.

E.Z. also had a passion that brought him—and many others—immense joy: CARS!

A lifelong enthusiast and collector, he belonged to more than 40 car clubs and built an extraordinary collection of over 200 vehicles, known as his "Triple C: Custom Car Collection," housed at the Brenford Auto Museum—fondly called "The BAM." But for E.Z., it was never just about the cars. It was about the people. He loved opening his doors, hosting gatherings, and bringing others together.

He founded several car clubs of his own, with the last one being the "Just Cruzin' Easy Car Club," whose motto—"Don't Let 'Er Conk Out"—felt like a reflection of E.Z.  himself. Through health challenges, personal loss, and the many trials of life, he continued forward with determination, humor, and faith.

He also found joy in music and photography, and he had a gift for making others feel welcome. His home was a place where stories were told, laughter was shared, music was enjoyed, and friendships were strengthened.

E.Z.  is survived by his children: Dorayne Breedlove (Doug Klein), Art Sedmont Jr., "Bunny" Phyllis Bennett (Arvie Bennett, Jr.), and Jacqui Sedmont (Talal Baruki). He is also survived by his grandchildren: David Mauro (Christin Meadows), Roquelle Mana Kai, Miranda Poklikuha, Journey Mijares (Andres), Stephen Fenstermacher, Benjamin Arthur Sedmont, and Matthew Jacob Sedmont, Gabriela Sinclair, Marina Boiter (Rhett), Alora Grimes, Jimmy Baruki, and great grandchildren Jace, Blake, Beau, Trinity, Luna along with extended family members and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Bergman Sedmont, and his brother, Roger Sedmont.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Matthews Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna DE 19977 on Wednesday, April 15, 11:00 Visitation and 12:00 Memorial Service. Immediately following the service, there will be a procession to the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery - 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear DE 19701 at 1:00 with an Air Force Honor Guard burial ceremony at 2:00.

E.Z.'s life was one of service—to his country, his community, and, above all, to the people he loved. He faced life's challenges with strength and met its joys with gratitude. Those who knew him will remember not only what he did, but how he made them feel—valued, welcomed, and cared for.

He was a man of deep and abiding faith, who gave thanks daily for the blessings in his life and trusted in God through both joy and hardship. He would end every correspondence with "Yours-in-Christ."

It brings comfort to know that he is now reunited with Nancy, at peace, and held in eternal love.

And in the spirit of a man who appreciated a good story and a life well lived, we might say, as he often did: So now you know the rest of the story.
