Obituary

Betty Jane "BJ" Grant (nee Harrington) passed away peacefully at home on Thursday December 10, 2020. She was 97 years old.

Betty was born in Glen Rogers, WV, the daughter of the late Francis J. and Betty Jane (Geach) Harrington and graduated from Glen Rogers High School. Betty became a nurse, one of the first graduating class of Mt. Carmel Mercy School of Nursing and was commissioned a 2 nd Lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corp serving in World War II.

Her life and career took her to Army bases in the US and Germany finally settling in Smryna and retiring as Day Nursing Supervisor at Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill.

After her retirement, Betty was a volunteer at the Smyrna Public Library for 20 years. She was a devout member of St Peters Episcopal Church and liked playing bridge and Mahjong.  She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and needlepointing making many beautiful items for family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lt. Col. Jonathan Grant and infant daughter Barbara; her grandson Eric Tennant; and her sister Patricia (Harrington) Free.

She is survived by her children, Frances J. Van Meter, Jonathan M. Grant II, Clark C. Grant (Annette), R. Brian Grant (Faith), M. Patrick Grant (Patricia); her grandchildren, Kristen (Tennant) Kelly, Clark C. Grant II (Brooke), Daniel Grant, Michael Grant (Dominique), Rachel Grant, Kendel Grant, Jessica Grant, Samantha Grant, Caitlin Grant, Kelsey Grant, Patricia Grant Landry (Michael); and great grandchildren, Ella Grant, Mason Grant, Nora Landry, Luke Grant Landry, and Maeve Grant. She also leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces; and half brother and sister, Daniel Harrington and Eleanor (Harrington) Whorley.

A visitation will be held from 10-11:00 AM Tuesday December 22 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, with a private service and burial at the Delaware Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE to follow. A mask or face-covering are required to comply with Covid-19 guidelines.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 22 North Union St., Smyrna, DE 19977.
