Obituary

Austin W. Carey, of Clayton, passed away on Sunday February 12, 2017 at Pinnacle Rehab Center, Smyrna. He was 95.

He was born in Cheswold, the son of the late G. Russell and Mildred Wright Carey.

He was a Gunners Mate in the Navy during World War II, and served on the USS Hollis.

Mr. Carey was employed by the U.S. Civil Service at Dover Air Force Base for 19 years, and retired in 1984. He was also self-employed as a wallpaper hanger and painter for many years.

He was a life member of Clayton Fire Co., a member and Past Commander of VFW Post 8801, Clayton, and a member of American Legion Post 14, Smyrna.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Brookdale Assisted Living and Pinnacle Rehab for all of their care and assistance. A special thank you goes out to Betty Burris and Dave and Jeanne Knotts for their support during this difficult time.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Hollett Carey, and a longtime companion, Virginia D. Cubbage.

He is survived by a son, William A. Carey, of Smyrna; a brother, Carlton R. Carey, of Newark; a sister, Ruth M. Hollett, of Newark; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday February 18 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call Friday evening from 6-8:00 PM.

Burial with military honors will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Clayton Fire Company, P.O. Box 1050, Clayton, DE. 19938.
